Buying a shed in Galway
Galway is one of Ireland's wetter counties, with Atlantic weather rolling in from the west. Exposed sites on the coast or in Connemara get strong wind and salt spray on top of heavy rain.
A shed usually does not need planning permission from Galway City Council or Galway County Council. It is normally exempted development under the Planning and Development Regulations (Schedule 2, Part 1, Class 3) if it meets every condition: it is behind the front wall of the house; all garden structures together, existing ones included, come to no more than 25 m²; at least 25 m² of private open space is left to the rear or side; it is no more than 4 m high with a tiled or slated pitched roof, or 3 m with any other roof; and it is used only for purposes incidental to enjoying the house: not lived in, not a business. If you're unsure, ask Galway City Council or Galway County Council about a Section 5 declaration before you order. The edge cases are in our planning permission guide.
Material advice for Galway: Steel is usually the safer choice on exposed or coastal sites, especially west of the city and in Connemara, where wind, rain and salt are hard on timber. In a sheltered garden in the city or east Galway, timber can work well. If you choose timber, specify pressure-treated, not dip-treated, and expect to re-treat it more often than on the east coast.

Common questions: sheds in Galway
Do I need planning permission for a shed in Galway?
Usually not. A shed is normally exempted development under the Planning and Development Regulations (Schedule 2, Part 1, Class 3) if it meets every condition: it is behind the front wall of the house; all garden structures together, existing ones included, come to no more than 25 m²; at least 25 m² of private open space is left to the rear or side; it is no more than 4 m high with a tiled or slated pitched roof, or 3 m with any other roof; and it is used only for purposes incidental to enjoying the house: not lived in, not a business. Galway City Council and Galway County Council both apply these national rules. If your home is a protected structure or in an area of special amenity, check with the council first. If you're unsure, ask Galway City Council or Galway County Council about a Section 5 declaration before you order.
Is steel or timber better for Galway?
Steel is usually the safer choice on exposed or coastal sites, particularly west of the city and in Connemara, where the Atlantic weather is hard on timber. Even pressure-treated boards need re-treating more often there than in sheltered counties. In a sheltered garden, timber can work well: specify pressure-treated, not dip-treated.

Get the deposit and delivery terms in writing too. If you live in Connemara or on the islands, ask whether your Eircode attracts a delivery surcharge. Our cost guide has a quote worksheet you can use.
